Would it surprise you if I told you that most businesses don’t know what they really want? Business leaders have no hesitation saying how big they want to be or how profitable. But when asked what their company will be doing in ten years, they don’t really know unless it is some extension of what they are doing now—only bigger and better.
If you are in a growth industry or a new business, perhaps there is so much growth opportunity in front of you, just working to capitalize on it is going to get you to your goals. For most companies, those that have been in business over 5 years, that isn’t enough.
Numbers aren’t a vision. As one of my bosses used to day “a monkey can put numbers out there but it takes a person with vision to make them happen.”
Are you that person with vision? Can you describe what your company WILL look like in 5 or 10 years because you have a purpose and a vision and a plan to make it happen? Are you committed to perservere through the good times and the rough times?

- Know what you want –specifically as possible
- Be committed to make it happen–believe you can
- Do your homework–know, don’t guess, what it will take
- Be prepared to adapt–you can’t predict everyhting but know there is always a Plan B
