We ALL want things to be better tomorrow. If only wishing could make it so!! When was the last time you had a GREAT day–top to bottom? More likely you remember your last not so great day–when nothing went your way.
I was reminded recently of a book I read to my kids called Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. Alexander endured gum in his hair to a trip to the dentist–all on the same day! He didn’t do anything wrong–bad things just happened.
So how do we reverse that and create better tomorrows? If you want to be sure it happens and not leave it to luck, there is only way; prepare for it!
The question then is “How to use today to prepare for a successful tomorrow?” There are three key things:
1. Define success: It is pretty hard to achieve it if you don’t know it when you see it! Success is not the same for everyone. Perhaps you want to be famous? Publish a book? Double the company? Build a company culture? Decide what you are aiming for.
2. Act today: Once you know what you want to achieve, don’t let one day go by without doing something to move you forward. Read an article, seek advice, practice a new skill; whatever moves you in that direction. It may not go well–you won’t always get the feedback you want or you may learn what doesn’t work; but you will learn. Over time, those small efforts will pay off and you will find you are getting closer to success!
3. Assess regularly: At the end of each day, ask yourself what you did or learned that day that helped you on your way. You may find that what you thought was a bad day was actually a very helpful day in that it taught you some valuable insights about what doesn’t work or where you don’t want to go.
Don’t procrastinate starting down that road to success until tomorrow. You will never have today back. It is lost forever if not used. In fact, if you always wait until tomorrow, you will never start. Only you are responsible for your success. Make the decision once and then manage it daily. You will be amazed at how you pick up traction at you go and arrive at success!
